Preventative Prayer

June 26, 2010

It is great to know that Jesus who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. This verse makes me excited because interceding  is present tense! This means that at this actual moment Jesus is acting on our behalf, to God.  So if Jesus prays to the Father shouldn’t we pray even more?

It is evident to pray while there is trouble but what ever happened to praying to prevent things from happening.  This does not mean that we will not have troubles, prayer is just a precaution.  Just like when you drive your car, you put on a seat belt just in case something were to happen.  So why not apply this same concept to your marriage?

Many people may not know how to pray but this cannot be an excuse for not doing so because we have an example (Click Here for the Lord’s prayer). The prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 teaches us how to pray; it gives us 6 different categories on how to’s, which are:

  1. How to enter into the presence of God by worship (Matt 6:9)
  2. How to establish the kingdom of God on earth (Matt 6:10)
  3. How to establish the provision of God in life (Matt 6:11)
  4. How to position ourselves in a place of love (Matt 6:12)
  5. How to defeat the enemy & fight temptations before they start (Matt 6:13)
  6. How to live under His authority (Matt 6:13)

Both the husband and wife should be praying individually for the areas they may need help in but it is also important for you to pray for your spouse. Note: also pray as a couple (Click Here to see why you should pray as a couple).  It is necessary to pray that the Lord keeps your husband in good health, keeps him from harm, and keeps him from temptation; for no test or temptation that comes his way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All he needs to remember is that God will never let him down; He’ll never let him be pushed past his limit; He’ll always be there to help him come through it. Now, it is impossible to think of every type of situation that may cause harm but God will get the gist, I promise.  If you don’t take my word for it read  what the bible has to say: For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. God has your back but prayer is where it begins!

While you pray for your husband, God will do miraculous things for not only your husband but for you.  He will start to softened your heart where it has been hardened from heartache.  It’s funny how all things really do work together for prayer, is the utmost love language.
